Valmet will update the existing Valmet DNA Automation System at Stora Enso's power plant in Imatra, Finland. Imatra Mills run its operations extensively with Valmet's automation technology. The power plant and its auxiliary systems are essential to ensuring the smooth running of mill operations, making it crucial that the automation system functions reliably.

The order is included in Valmet's orders received of the second quarter 2024. The value of the order is not disclosed. The delivery will take place in two phases during annual shutdowns with the first phase completed in November 2025 and the second one during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Since the production process operates 24/7, any issues could lead to production losses. By implementing a life cycle upgrade for the Valmet DNA Automation System, we enhance reliability and greatly minimize the risk of unplanned shutdowns," says Mikko Marttinen Project Manager at Stora Enso Imatra Mills.

The power plant's Valmet DNA Automation System and auxiliary systems will be upgraded in two phases, spread across 2025 and 2026. The control room will receive the Valmet DNA User Interface update in 2026. While most of the IO cabinets will be replaced with new ones, some adapters will be used to meet the tight update schedule. The full automation system upgrade will cover all process stations, operator stations, IO cabinets, and safety-related systems.

Stora Enso is a leading provider of renewable products in packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction, and one of the largest private forest owners in the world. The company has approximately 20,000 employees, and its sales in 2023 were EUR 9.4 billion.

Imatra Mills is one of the largest mills producing consumer packaging board in the world, with over 90% of its produce exported to Europe, Southeast Asia and other continents.
